名词转化为形容词时,一般是同源的,即在原来的名词后加一个形容词后缀,如:wind—windy, cloud—cloudy, friend—friendly, miracle—miraculous。但有相当一部分名词在转化为形容词时,其词根变得面目全非,如:moon—lunar。下面是这类词汇的部分例子:
blood —sanguinary血腥残暴的
body—corporal
bone—osseous
brother—fraternal
child—pediatric
ear—aural
earthquake—seismic: The Richter scale is a measurement of seismic disturbances.
earth—terrestrial
eye—ocular
father—paternal
flesh肉体—carnal
glass—vitreous
heart—cardiac
heat—thermal: Hot springs in Conghua give excellent thermal baths.
Lungs—pulmonary: In his researches on pulmonary diseases, he discovered many facts about the lungs of animals and human beings.
man—male
mind—mental: mental powers智力
moon—lunar
mother—maternal: maternal love母爱
sky—celestial
star—sidereal, stellar
sun—solar: Many universities in Guangzhou have installed solar heating systems in dormitories.
tooth—dental
tree—arboreal: Apes are arboreal animals
uncle—avunclular (like an uncle): Avuncular pride did not prevent him from noticing his nephew’s shortcomings.
water—aquatic: Ducks are aquatic animals
woman—female
wood—ligneous: Petrified wood may be ligneous in appearance, but it is stonelike in composition.
