Top seed Roger Federer advanced to the second round of the French Open by beating Diego Hartfield of Argentina in straight sets, 7-5, 7-6 (7-2), 6-2.
Federer, the world's top-ranked player, was originally set to face Arnaud Clement, but the veteran Frenchman was forced to withdraw with a thigh injury and Federer faced Hartfield, a qualifier, instead.
Federer struggled with Hartfield, who is ranked just 156th in the world. The Argentine broke Federer three times and actually led 3-0 and 5-3 in the opening set before Federer finished by winning four straight games to take the set.
The Swiss star then dominated Hartfield in a second-set tiebreak and ran away with a dominant third.
In other action, seventh-seeded Tommy Robredo upended Czech Tomas Zib 6-4 6-2 6-2 to reach the second round.
The Spaniard disposed of the world number 109 in easy fashion and will face the winner of the Boris Pashanski - Ilia Bozoljac match for a birth in the third round.
Robredo, who won the Hamburg Masters last week, is attempting to reach a grand slam semifinal for the first time in his career. |
